Audit Officer - Derry City & Strabane District Council
Join Derry City and Strabane District Council as an Audit Officer and carry out internal audit work in line with approved plans and professional standards. You will play a key role in providing objective assurance and supporting continuous improvement across Council services, including the City of Derry Airport.
About this role:
- Circa £21.13 per hour
- Location: Strand Road, L/Derry however travel may be required to other offices.
- 1 month contract initially
- Immediate start
- Full time
What you'll be doing in this role:
- Implement and deliver a Strategic and Operational Risk‑Based Internal Audit Plan, evaluating both financial and non‑financial systems and controls.
- Carry out internal audits impartially and in line with relevant Codes of Practice, Professional Standards, and the Global Internal Audit Standards for the UK Public Sector.
- Identify weaknesses in internal systems and controls and make recommendations to Senior Management, monitoring implementation and effectiveness.
- Undertake follow‑up reviews to assess progress against agreed audit recommendations.
- Support the development and maintenance of an effective Assurance Framework, ensuring audits are fully risk‑based and reflected within Risk Registers.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and supporting documentation for the Assurance, Audit and Risk Committee and other Council Committees, attending meetings as required.
- Maintain awareness of evolving regulatory obligations and professional developments within the internal audit profession.
- Assist with the development and implementation of audit methodologies, processes, and documentation.
What you'll need for this role:
- A qualified member of the Institute of Internal Auditors, having achieved as a minimum the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) qualification,
- OR a fully qualified accountant and a member of a professional body affiliated to the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies (CCAB)
- Possess a minimum of two years’ internal audit experience.
