Senior Project Manager (Automation) - L/Derry - Permanent
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Project Manager (Automation) to join a leading advanced manufacturing organisation. In this role, you will take on a key technical and leadership position, driving the design, development and optimisation of advanced automated systems across a range of industrial applications.
Working as part of a growing engineering team, you will lead projects from concept through to commissioning, developing control systems, PLC and robotic solutions, and ensuring successful delivery of complex, high-value projects while supporting and mentoring junior engineers.

What you'll be doing in this role:
- Lead full‑lifecycle automation projects, managing budgets, timelines, and technical delivery.
- Develop complete control philosophies, selecting appropriate I/O architectures, communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, OPC UA), and ensuring robust OT‑level cybersecurity.
- Write modular, reusable PLC code using platforms such as Siemens TIA Portal.
- Oversee the creation of electrical schematics, P&IDs, and panel layouts, ensuring compliance with NEC, UL 508A, CE, and other relevant standards.
- Integrate data systems for predictive maintenance, OEE tracking, and cloud‑based analytics.
- Work with multi‑axis servo systems and industrial robots (KUKA, ABB, collaborative robots) to deliver complete automation solutions.
- Transition systems from development to production, including physical testing, PID tuning, and troubleshooting under pressure.
- Compile bills of materials and ensure timely procurement of components.
What you'll need for this role:
- Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience in automation engineering, ideally within an electrical engineering environment.
- Strong expertise in PLC programming, control systems, and industrial automation.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Knowledge of CE marking, ISO machinery directives, and risk assessment methodologies.
- Understanding of safety standards including Performance Level (PL) and Safety Integrity Level (SIL).
- Ability to produce risk assessments and method statements.
