Environmental Health Officer - Derry City & Strabane District Council

We’re looking for an experienced Environmental Health Officer to join the public sector team at Derry City & Strabane District Council. This is a chance to work in a varied role with responsibilities spanning health promotion, environmental protection, and public health -making a genuine difference in your community.
Role Overview
As an Environmental Health Officer, you’ll contribute to essential services in Health and Community Wellbeing, including:
- Conducting inspections on commercial and domestic properties to ensure adherence to health and environmental regulations.
- Providing professional advice to the public, businesses, and government bodies, addressing diverse issues from food control to pollution.
- Investigating complaints and enforcing statutory provisions, working closely with the Principal Environmental Health Officer to recommend and implement solutions.
- Inspection & Compliance: Inspect premises, assess risk, and enforce compliance with health and safety regulations.
Complaint Resolution: Investigate service requests, apply Codes of Practice, and implement action through education or enforcement.
- Policy Contribution: Develop, review, and enhance Council policies to support continuous improvement in service delivery.
- Legal Preparation & Enforcement: Prepare statutory notices, prosecution cases, and serve as an expert witness when required.
- Public Engagement: Offer guidance to Council departments and the public on health and environmental issues, contributing to public inquiries, planning, and licensing.
- Community Health Initiatives: Develop and deliver training programs and educational initiatives to promote health and well-being.
Criteria:
- Education: Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health, accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
- Experience: Minimum of one year in Environmental Health (placement year acceptable), ideally within a team-oriented environment.
- Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office, strong written communication abilities, and a collaborative approach.
- Driver’s License: Full driver’s license is required.
